In the old Amsterdam workshops, quality was judged by smell, by touch and by the master's word. Today we have something more precise and far harder to fake: the lab report. A certificate of analysis, COA for short, is a document that turns traditional trust into verifiable numbers. At SMOUKS we consider it as important as the scent of the flower itself — because in botanicals, where pretty packaging is not enough, what counts is what can only be seen under the microscope and in an instrument's spectrum.
What a COA is and why to look for one
A COA (Certificate of Analysis) is the official output of an accredited laboratory describing what a given batch really contains. It is not a marketing leaflet or a seller's promise — it is an independent measurement of a specific sample from a specific batch. That is exactly why, in the culture of quality botanicals, it is the most trustworthy language there is.
A good certificate from hemp lab testing always states three things: who tested, what they tested (batch number, date, product type) and what the results were. If the document lacks the laboratory's name or the batch identification, it isn't a COA — it's just a nicely formatted piece of paper.
What a laboratory actually measures
A lab analysis is not one test but a series of independent analyses. Each answers a different question about the purity and composition of the sample. In practice, these are the categories you'll come across most often:
- Compound profile — the relative proportions of individual cannabinoids or botanical substances in the sample, expressed as percentages.
- Terpene profile — the aromatic compounds that make up the batch's characteristic scent; purely sensory and chemical information, not a statement about effects.
- Pesticides and herbicides — a check that no unwanted agricultural residues have found their way into the plant.
- Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury, which plants can absorb from the soil.
- Microbiology and moulds — the presence of bacteria, yeasts or moulds, including mycotoxins.
- Residual solvents — for extracts and vapes, a check that no traces of technical solvents remain after production.
For each of these parameters, the laboratory compares the measured value with a limit. The result is most often marked “pass” or with the abbreviation ND — non-detected, meaning the substance was not found. That is exactly the word you want to see next to contaminants.
How to read a certificate, step by step
At first glance a COA looks like a table full of abbreviations, but finding your way around it is easier than it seems. Just work from top to bottom and ask yourself straightforward questions.
- Header: Does the batch number on the pack match the number on the document? Are the date of analysis and the laboratory's name given?
- Identity: Does the tested product match the one you're holding?
- Profile: Are the compound and terpene values given as specific figures, not just in words?
- Safety: Do the rows for pesticides, heavy metals, microbiology and solvents show pass or ND?
- Signature: Is the document dated and issued by a named laboratory, not anonymously?
A certificate isn't extra bureaucracy. It is the one place where quality stops being promised and starts being proven.
If any of these answers is missing or vague, that is a reason to take notice. In this world, transparency is the first sign of seriousness.
Why SMOUKS tests every batch, no exceptions
We could test one representative batch and pretend it applies to everything. We don't. Every plant grows at a different time, in different soil and under different conditions — so every batch gets its own COA. For us it is a matter of craftsman's honour, not just a paperwork obligation.
This approach comes from the Dutch tradition that inspires SMOUKS: quality is not assumed, quality is verified. Discretion towards the customer and openness about the facts go hand in hand with us. That is why lab testing of hemp at SMOUKS is the standard, not an extra — and why our products come with documentation you can read for yourself.
Quality in black and white
Scent, appearance and the masters' tradition still belong to this craft — but only a certificate turns them into certainty. A COA is the bridge between the old world of trust and the modern world of precision. At SMOUKS we consider it as much a part of the product as the batch itself, because premium doesn't just mean beautiful packaging, but also what stands behind it. Everything we offer is strictly for adults aged 18 and over, and always lab-tested — no exceptions, every batch.
